Common Allergy Types and Triggers

Common Allergy Types and Triggers

An allergy is an outcome when the immune system of the body identifies a particular substance as harmful and in response reacts causing an allergic reaction. The substance responsible for allergy is called an allergen. There are different types of allergies and some are even seasonal and worst even life long. Allergens can be present anywhere and in many cases not even visible to the naked eyes.

Managing allergy is a huge challenge but it is not impossible. Identifying the right allergen that triggers the allergy and staying away from it is the best solution to manage an allergy. Let us take a look at some of the most common allergens to present indoors.

Insect allergy

  • Dust Mite
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma Immunology claims that dust mites are microscopic insects commonly responsible for asthma symptom triggers. Dust mites feed on human skin flakes and are known to thrive when the humidity of the room is above 40% and the temperature is above 70 degrees. They are usually present on bedding and soft furniture. Dust mites can be controlled by washing the linen in hot water and encasing the pillows and mattresses with allergen-proof coverings. Dust mites don’t bite humans unlike bed bugs hence they widely go unnoticed. Vacuuming with heap filters is an excellent solution for getting rid of dust mites.
  • Cockroaches
Common in urban regions, cockroaches are one of the most common reasons for respiratory allergy. The saliva and the excreta carry allergens and extermination should be done as soon as possible since they multiply very fast. In a month’s time, there will be an infestation and people with an allergy will find it hard. If living in an apartment it is best to call a pest control agency and get the extermination done as soon as possible.

Airborne allergy

Pollen
Many will be surprised how pollen will affect indoors, but one can literally bring pollen inside in their clothes and luggage. Even pets bring in pollen misleading the pets as the cause of allergy. It is best to wipe the pets after they enter the home and keep the windows closed when it is windy and use the air conditioning during summer.

Pet Allergy
Some people are allergic to the dander shed by their beloved pets. However, it is noticed that not every breed has the same allergic reaction on reactive people which is a mystery. There are some breeds that produce less dander. Dander can be reduced by de-shedding the pets regularly that maintain hygiene as well as get rid of the dander. For aspirant pet lovers it is always better to spend some time with your pet before ushering him or her to the house.

Allergic reactions are unavoidable as long as humans come in contact with different elements of the environment directly or indirectly. Most of the allergen is not even visible to the naked eye hence the best solution is to undergo an allergy test and determine what allergens trigger a reaction and try to be away from those triggers.
